Who We Are

Our Institutional History

For fifty years, the Christian Health Association of Liberia has been a steadfast presence in the nation's healthcare landscape — connecting faith, community, and medicine across some of Liberia's most remote corners. This is our story.

  • Founding
    1975
    The Birth of CHAL

The medical authorities of five mainstream Christian hospitals — Curran Lutheran, Phebe, Ganta United Methodist, St. Joseph's Catholic and ELWA — recognised that procuring medical supplies together in bulk would dramatically reduce costs and save time. This shared vision gave birth to the Christian Health Association of Liberia, uniting faith-based facilities under one coordinated network.

  • 1978
    Drugs Supply Unit Established

CHAL formalised its pharmaceutical operations through the creation of the Drugs Supply Unit (DSU), providing quality-assured essential medicines and medical supplies to faith-based health facilities, NGOs, and non-member institutions across Liberia.

  • 1980s
    Network Expansion Across Counties

CHAL steadily expanded its membership beyond the founding hospitals, drawing in clinics, health centres and mission hospitals from across Liberia's counties. The network became a critical backbone for rural healthcare delivery in hard-to-reach communities underserved by government facilities.

  • Resilience
    1989–2003
    Sustaining Healthcare Through Civil War

During Liberia's devastating civil conflicts, CHAL member facilities continued delivering healthcare to communities caught in conflict zones. CHAL's coordination role became even more critical as the national health system collapsed, and faith-based facilities became the primary point of care for millions of Liberians.

  • 2003
    Post-War Reconstruction & Partnership

Following the end of armed conflict, CHAL intensified its engagement with international donors and the Ministry of Health to rebuild health infrastructure. Strategic partnerships with organisations including Bread for the World, IMA World Health, and Difaem laid the groundwork for sustained programmatic work.

  • Crisis Response
    2014–2016
Ebola Response & Health Systems Support

When the Ebola virus disease outbreak devastated West Africa, CHAL member facilities were at the front line of the response in Liberia. CHAL coordinated infection prevention and control training, supply distribution, and community outreach across its network, supporting the national effort to contain the outbreak.

  • 2018
    Pharma 750 Programme Launched

With support from the German Institute for Medical Mission (Difaem), CHAL launched Phase I of the Pharma 750 project — strengthening the DSU's capacity to improve access to quality-assured medicines in Liberia. The programme delivered training, assessments, and supply chain upgrades across member facility dispensaries.

  • 2020–2022
    Saving Lives & Livelihoods Programme

CHAL partnered with Amref Health Africa and Africa CDC under the Mastercard Foundation's Saving Lives and Livelihoods programme to strengthen Liberia's immunisation system. Phase I expanded vaccine delivery, trained community health workers, and supported COVID-19 vaccination campaigns across four counties.

  • 2024
    RMNCH Quality of Care Programme

CHAL launched a Brot für die Welt-supported programme to strengthen reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health services across 20 faith-based facilities in five counties. Activities included EmNOC training, infection prevention infrastructure, MCH construction, and community health engagement.

  • 50th Anniversary
    2025
Half a Century of Holistic Healthcare

CHAL celebrated its 50th Anniversary in November 2025 under the theme "50 Years of Holistic Health Care Services to the People in Liberia: Celebrating the Past, Embracing the Future." Highlights included a thanksgiving service, a groundbreaking ceremony for a new multi-purpose building, a health march through Monrovia, and a state dinner attended by over 90 guests.

  • Milestone
    2025
    Medical Oxygen Refilling Plant Opened

In partnership with the Rotary Club of Sinkor, CHAL officially opened a state-of-the-art Medical Grade Oxygen Refilling Plant in Meleke Town, Bong County — the first of its kind operated by a faith-based health organisation in Liberia. The plant serves hospitals and health centres across the region, operating daily from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
